Hello.....
« on: December 06, 2012, 08:24:23 pm »
Just wanted to say Hi,

Currently a townie in Lancashire but with a new job to start in the new year in Elgin, we're in the middle of planning the move so looking for a smallholding in the area with enough room for OH's horse, our 3 dogs, 2 guinea pigs, 1 cat that adopted us and possibly another horse, a small flock of sheep ( castlemik moorits preferably ) and some chickens!

Any suggestions, assistance or guidance greatly appreciated....

Hello and welcome from Carnoustie!

Good luck with the relocation! Best tip - buy as much of the best land you can afford. If you don't want to use it (yet), you can rent it out. You can change a house much more easily than you can change land.

Hi from Moray...

If you want to buy a property up here, best look on the various Solicitor Property Centres - solicitors do the estate agency bit as well as the legal side.

There is a centre for Moray, one for NE  - covers further east, and one for Highland.
See link here:http://www.sspc.co.uk/centre

The 'big' land agents work up here - search for Strutt & Parker, Savills, CKD Galbraith, Bell Ingram - they operate estate agencies along side their estate management. Also the usual suspect - Right Move.

Good luck with the move. When we came up here from Hertfordshire, we found it easier to rent a place and search from here, much easier than the 650 mile trek up the A1 to Edinburgh and beyond.

The buying system works differently up here too - have read up on the 'offers over' system.

Please ask if you have any questions about the area.

Regards

Sue

Thanks Sue,

We've been looking for the past 12 months and have used the excuse of looking at properties as a good reason for weekend aways ( although hectic with the distances involved  ) but I will be starting my new job before selling our existing house so will have time to view whilst up there.

Where abouts are you at ?

We're rural between Elgin & Forres - we have a small farm of just under 50 acres.

Must agree with Rosemary, you can never have too much land, and there's always someone wanting to rent it for their sheep/cattle/alpacas if you think you've got too much to handle...

It's great around here - Moray is a very friendly place to live.

Hi Sue,

We're looking around Aberlour and Keith at the moment and are viewing a couple of properties the week before Christmas - both with around 10 acres so not quite as much as you.

The area around Aberlour is very nice - being close to the Spey it's a bit more scenic than Keith.

And Aberlour is closer to Elgin for work - do bear in mind the weather up here in the winter. Most main roads are cleared of snow under the council priority scheme, but small rural roads are last on the list - so you may find yourself stuck at home if your lane doesn't get cleared. Of course, the council does have a good gritting policy and is very efficient at keeping most routes open - just don't buy a property on the Tomintoul to Grantown road - it features regularly on the local radio when the snow gates are shut...

Good luck with the house hunting.

Regards

Sue

Welcome from East Yorkshire

We have just moved into our small holding and working through the jobs until the spring when we looking at chickens, ducks, goats etc (all must pay for themselves so lots of research to do and as much as I would love a couple of horses can't see how they can self fund).

Good luck with your search
