need a couple of new tyres, now in the past I've always just bought the cheapest one on offer but did a search on ATS and it came back with a couple of choices, a "cheap" one (hankook) and one (pirelli) that claims to offer lower fuel comsumption and better stopping distance, but at £50 odd more per tyre. How much of this is marketing guff and how much actual fact?

it depends alot on the mileage you do too, i do around 30k a year so cheap tyres every time for me!!

I had some nasty steering wheel snatching problems with Pirelli. Tried sorting the tracking but to no avail. The last garage said they had seen the problem before on Mondeos fitted with Pirelli tyres. Suggested I fitted Continental or Mitchelin. I fitted Continentals and the problem vanished!

All the tyres come out of the same mould.. Just a different mould so u paying for the name

That's about my mileage too and my local garage put on budget tyres frop me normal.ly but this last service in August they gave me a present of two pirellis at budget price (£50 each) as a customer had ordered them then changed his mind.  Not had any issues with them and just drove to Stafford and back yesterday.

When Which? magazine tested 100 sets of tyres - lots of different sizes and makes - it was quite hard to see a pattern.   Some budget tyres were great, some dreadful, and the same with expensive brands.


Interestingly there were not many Best Buy and not many Don't Buy tyres.  It's quite hard to make a tyre with good dry grip, wet grip, economy and wear rate.   But one of the Don't Buys took 24m longer in the wet to slow from 50mph than the best.

We HAVE to fit winter tyres here (if you are involved in an accident in winter without them you are in trouble)
most people keep a complete set of wheels and swap them in nov and march. Its the softer rubber that copes with the cold better , stopping shorter than standard tyres.
you have to swap again in the spring as the softer rubber wears badly on hot summer tarmac.
