Wheezing Sow
« on: October 12, 2012, 03:43:26 pm »
Never rains but it pours ... :raining:

Our Old spot sow is wheezing - she is eating and drinking no temp but sounds like she has something in her throat, or been smoking heavily - trying not to joke about this as it has been a bit of a week and as always it is the weekend. It sounds like she has phlegm and needs a good cough. have never had this in any of the pigs before only George in his last hours so slightly worried. She is with a boar and two other sows and looks acts perfectly normal apart from this throat issue.

Any ideas? - have text the vet. Thanks as always

Well just been down to feed the pigs and Gloria is running around, eating and drinking - still has this sore throaty sound. Checked the arc - normal straw fresh and not that dusty. Will just keep checking her.

Ditto what HH says, we've had to bore some two inch holes (in the apex)in the back of our wooden arks to increase air flow. If you have some antibiotics left over from George might be worth giving them to Gloria just in case pneumonia is hovering. Anyway so long as shes happy, eating & drinking

 Hi from a very wet and soggy but humid SW France.

Thanks HH and Mandy
Gloria had George's ABs and doesn't sound so wheezy this morning.  She has not taken to her bed and has been up and about at all times eating and drinking and being her normal grumpy self.  We also bore holes in the back of the 8 x 8 - which we thought had them. The wind has changed direction and there is a fresh breeze flowing through the arc. Going to give her another dose of AB tonight and hopefully make contact with the vet Monday just to check up on what we are doing is okay. No signs of this on the rest of our herd but we are checking constantly. The weather conditions I think are ripe for this type of illness.
Thanks again.

Good news, you can always tell they're on the mend when they get back to been their 'orrible selves :relief:
Similar conditions here except very damp and cold as opposed to humid. Could hear our old boar Gerry coughing his head off this morning, will have to keep an eye on him as he is prone to a bad chest in these conditions.
All the best
