The big one is public liability.  If your animals escape and cause a road accident with a coach load of nuns and mothers-in-law then the costs come down to you.  Employee liability is less of a problem usually for smallholders except when they pay a friend to so something and he loses an arm in the baler.

Pretty much everything else is normal replacement for stuff nicked.  You should be able to download a policy from the NFU Mutual which will give you pointers.  I use NFU but I'm not a big fan and will be getting quotes at renewal time.

Farmers and Mercantile have been taking a lot of business off NFU in recent years, and have (to date) good feedback on the farming forums re paying out (of course that can all change but thats the feedback to date). Dont know if they do 3rd party as well as buildings/stock but worth checking

NFU were really expensive compared to others when I rang round for quotes - and they'll only do a liability insurance if you have another policy with them, home, contents etc.

I ended up going with Cliverton

I have found NFU good value when you insure your house as well as your land/animals with them. It's also a pleasure doing business with them. More than I can say about most insurance companies. :innocent:

Greenlands have recently launched a smallholder insurance service (and they support TAS) so might be worth a look:
