Piglets 8 weeks. Now What?
« on: October 05, 2012, 09:56:31 pm »
Do I cut the sows  food back or do I need to "flush" her for when she comes in season. Does she really come in season 5 days after weaning date? Do I need to register with deerpark  and open an account or can I ring and get it send there and then. She is ped Welsh and want her to breed pure this time,
Loads of questions.

someone with more knowledge will come along and offer more advice regarding your quieries. However with deerpark you can just call up and they send you everything you need next day the invoice is then to be paid within 30days. They are very helpful just give them a call

it all depends on the condition of your sow after weaning, take her away from the piglets, out of smell  & earshot if poss cut her food back to her normal ration and for a few days watch her udder for heat or lumps(mastitits) at first it will look like she's going to burst but after a couple of days her udder will subside and approx 5-6 days later she'll come into season, you can then ring deerpark for semen which they'll get to you next day. personally i give my girls a season off to get condition back on them but thats for you to decide and then once you've AI'd or used a boar it begins all over again.
hth good luck

We usually take the piglets into the shed and put mum back into the big field with the other sows/gilts (they go into a small 'nursery' paddock from birth to 8 weeks so's it's easier to catch them at the point of weaning  ;))
On the day we wean, we don't actually give mum any hard feed - only some fruit and veg and plenty of water. I've always been told it dries them up quicker (maybe it doesn't  :-\), our sows are usually dry by about day 3 and showing season 2 or 3 days later.
Once you've got the piglets weaned, remember to worm them
Deerpark are great
Just phone them up (don't be surprised when you just get a 'Hello' when Robert answers the phone - there's no wee receptionist to take your order  ;)) tell them what you'd like and they'll get it in the post for you that day.
I'd be tempted to let her have this season, note when it is so you can be ready and watching for the first signs of back pressure in three weeks time.

Yes give her a bit of time, farmer friends who got their's in pig straight away lost quite a few from their subsequent batch, sure I wouldn't want to get pregnant again after I'd just had a baby, give her a break. :relief:
registered soay, castlemilk moorit  and north ronaldsay sheep, pygmy goats, steinbacher geese, muscovy ducks, various hens, lots of visiting mallards, a naughty border collie, a puss and a couple of guinea pigs

Thanks for all the wise advise. I will now give her 3 weeks off, especially as she had her first litter of nine and she did them well. Not looking forward to the AI bit though. She went to a very local lop lad.

you dont need an account for deerpark, just fone them up and itl arrive in a day or two.
you should control the sows diet to help her milk dry up. the idea of flushing, im sure is having her on a rising plain of nutrition.
our dolly lost a fair bit of weight feeding her first litter of 10, as soon as she was weaned the weight went on really quick and the boar served her within the week. she is glowing now and in tiptop condition, she must be 4 weeks pregnant if she took to him. and i hope she took to him cos wev just cooked him.... ::) :yum:
