The end of the line for our lambs and a question r.e. orphans
« on: September 26, 2012, 12:29:16 pm »
They are booked in for next Tuesday  :-\  all 6 are orphans that we got in March... they all survived and thrived but out of the 6 there were only 2 ewe lambs we would have kept to breed from, and there's not much point keeping 2 sheep... so they are all booked in for Tuesday and we will start again next season (get a few more than 6 and hopefully have 4 or 5 nice ewes to keep on).

Question though, I have heard there is new legislation coming in regarding keeping orphan lambs, does anybody know what it is? I've heard it may be difficult to get hold of any next year but don't know how true that is?

Not that I'd heard of - same as keeping any sheep. You need a holding and a flock number etc and do the same movement forms.

Yes we've got that as OH is a beef farmer. Maybe the people I heard it from got it wrong... hope so as I want to have more orphans next year as the demand for meat from family and close friends has been so high (and I want to keep a few ewes too :) )

If you are keeping them, they'll have to be double-tagged is all I can think of thats any different, but I double-tag everything anyway, so when I'm flogging orphans, they are all set p to be kept if people become fond of them.
