Transporting sow with new born piglets
« on: September 23, 2012, 01:42:07 pm »
Hi there
We recently put a deposit on a sow in pig who was due in October....we have just been advised that the sow has had her piglets. Could someone advise at what age the piglets should be before we transport them? I see from an earlier post that the regulations require they must be at least a week old. The journey is about 30 miles. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks all!

2 weeks before birth and 2 weeks after the birth    if you fail to adhere to this you can be prosecuted    special circumstances come into play   but don't think that includes buying them

some wont transport them a month before and a month after birth

the sellers record keeping is not up to much :farmer:

The sow can only be transported 2 WEEKS after her having her piglets by law. The piglets could be put into a dog crate and keep seperated from mum, that way there will be no fatalities.

personally i'd leave them as long as you can before transporting, the best way is as Lill has laready said, another tip is to take if you can a big sack of straw from her current home to bring with her to her new home that way she will smell the same smell and it will help settle her, you may find she is stressed by new surroundings and people and may be overprotective towards her litter so be careful.
