for interest to users of Millers of Speyside

we've just taken two pigs to slaughter and during the period between making the appointment and taking them we were phoned to say that they no longer do the butchery service.

It seems that it isn't cost effective anymore for them - however, there is a local butcher up there that is willing (at the moment) to do private kill butchery.

I dont think they wanted to do it for a long time - they had increased the price to butcher a lamb in house from £20 to £40 last time we took some  :o  errr no thanks!
the trouble is, they cant pick and choose - they wont butcher (which is why we bothered going the extra distance to them) so now they have lost our slaughter business too.
Paul Smith at Westhill butchered some lambs for me (ironically contracted out from Millers) in the past and so is worth asking if anyone is stuck.

I found our local butcher in Keith did a much better job than Millers anyway and cheaper.
Our holding has Anglo Nubian and British Toggenburg goats, Gotland sheep, Franconian Geese, Blue Swedish ducks, a whole load of mongrel hens and two semi-feral children.

We collected our butchered pigs yesterday and are very pleased with the result. The person who did them was employed by Millers and has gone solo. Louise, the lady who books your pigs etc in for slaughter is his wife (partner) and if you ring Millers and ask for butchery services she will contact you from home. Apparently Millers are happy for her to do this only on the understanding that any discussion has to take place in her own time. We asked them to ring us back after eight at night which they did - the service is excellent. The meat is vac packed to your requirements, sausages are hand linked and put on trays and, possibly the best part, is that he will cure bacon loins and vac pack them for you to cut up after the curing period FREE OF CHARGE!!! The meat is packed into the same card boxes as Millers.
He can do all farm animals including goats - which I think Millers will slaughter.
The cost (imho) is very fair - we got all the above and got change from £100 - just waiting for the bill for slaughter....
