Breed info please!
« on: May 15, 2009, 11:25:39 am »
Hi there; we're just preparing for our first chickens, and have kindly been offered some birds from a friend of a friend living locally. The only thing is, I can't seem to find any info on the particualr breed - they are Lomond Browns (which I'm told is a Scottish breed particualry suited to our climate), but the nearest I can find on an internet search is  a Lohmann Brown (which is and E European breed). Anyone help???

nae idea I'm afraid. 2 scottish breeds tend to be scots dumpy & scots grey, not that that helps you!

They are just a hybrid chuck. Try black rocks there meant to be good for the colder areas.

Lomond Browns are the hybrid that most of the ex batts are - easy to keep, lay every day and for a long time, not affected by lack of light, usually pretty healthy and very tame.
Always have been, always will be, a WYSIWYG - black is black, white is white - no grey in my life! But I'm mellowing in my old age

all the red hybrids are of a very simular background. we have 3 cross hylines with light sussex. we thought we had a new verity a ginger version of the standard light sussex but they are turning more ginger.

Sounds like they will be ideal for us as beginners then! their home is now ready and waiting.
Thanks!

Hopefully fairly secure from foxes - over 6ft high fence, with netting dug 6ins into ground and folded over a further 6 inches. Plus its very close to the house, where we are coming and going through the day, and they'll be tucked up securely in the coop at night. so fingers crossed!
