« on: August 21, 2012, 07:53:51 pm »

Only asking cost I have
a mercury in glass ( brinsea )
an alcohol in glass (My favorite!!! :roflanim:  :roflanim: :roflanim: :roflanim:)
and three digital units.

They all tell a different story.

They cant all be telling the truth.

Im a bit lost.

If i follow one another is wildly ( I say wildly in the context of incubating ducklingz ) out!

anyway been rummaging around the net ( as ewe doo ) and I found this...

Good thermometer will come calibrated. I found brinsea ones pretty reliable over the years.
Tucked away on the downs in wiltshire.

Unless you are ill of course Robbiegrant! We use a clinical mercury thermometer to check our incubators. They only operate over a small range and are very accurate in that range. My wife was a nurse so has one, but they can be bought from Chemists.

What is often found with digital thermometers is the 0.1 degree readout implies 0.1 degree accuracy, which is usually far from the case. Also to check is the operating range, that is the temperature at which the heater switches off compared to the temperature when it again switches on. For incubators this difference should be 0.5 degrees but some units can be 2 degrees or more.

Hi Chris.
I have opted for a brinsea digital incubation thermometer for now. I understand what you mean about the ),1 degree reading on digital units being misleading as my other ( cheapo ) thermometer is 2 degs higher...

I will try a chemist for a mercury back up... or may take the plunge and buy a calibrated russels instruments incubation mercury in glass...

I don't think you can buy mercury thermometers any more?  We got fed up with finding that the new digital ones had a flat battery or a had ceased working so bought half a dozen old fashioned clinical mercury ones on eBay.  The digital ones aren't waterproof....

When the lady from trading standards came to give us advice about our cheese making, I showed her our thermometer that we use for pasturising, a good professional  meat one, Not good enough she said, so I asked her why they were allowed to sell inacurate ones, she could not answer the question.
