I dunno. Happy Hippy got a couple of overweight gilts, tried to diet them but put them away in the end. The bacon was fatty but very tasty. Not sure how her figures worked out but I'm sure she'll share in due course.

If they're overweight (and over 9-10 months, thus developed and grown enough to be without the vitamins and minerals found in pig feed) and free - then you could keep them on grass with some fruit & veg. til the end of September before starting to suppliment with a bit of haylage and some pig nuts once the weather gets colder - it'll cost very little to slim them down

Our 'fat' gilts were bought with the intention of using them to breed (the pervious owner had let them get a bit fat and also left it a bit late for getting them to the boar) we kept them here, slimmed them down a bit and they ran with the boar. As each season came and went (with obvious signs of service) it was more obvious that they weren't going to get in-pig (plus they were pretty aggressive towards my other pigs - including the Tamworths  :o) so we didn't really want to breed from that kind of temprament and took the decision to slaughter. Both were over 100Kg deadweight and yes, they were very fat (even having dieted for a while) but very tasty  :yum:
I'm a bit of a bacon fan (part of the reason why I keep Large Blacks too  ;)) and am struggling to find better than that from the Kunekunes  :-\
I don't think they're more trouble than they're worth  :-* I think Kunekunes are great  :pig: But I'm not going to start singing all their praises here cos it always starts a fight  ::)

In saying more  trouble than they are worth' I meant the ones my friend rehomed. They had no end of problems with them, on the plus side they were very friendly

fat pigs are more bother than they are worth    you have to be very ruthless to get them slimmed down    basically let them fend for themselves in a wood or field     the best way is to leave a litter of pigs on them but you will have difficulty getting them in pig in the first place as Karen pointed out   and nobody with any credence has researched what a pig can get from rooting about  energy/protein wise

i will take you to task on the pigs not requiring vitamins and minerals past a certain age

go on Karen try a Hampshire for bacon it must be one of the few breeds you have not tried yet :farmer:

So who said they were fat?

Just trying to help here folks. I don't think it matters if they go for meat or breeding. They have are owned by the chap I borrowed my boar from , they have lived outside all their lives and he is just getting out of pigs now. I would take them but I have too many and autumn is looming.

My Kune Kune sows are fenced in a run, so only get the food I give them .....and its not a lot, given the short time it take to eat it.  I feed them twice a day, otherwise they kick off loudly, and they get veg and grass I collect for them.

They look overweight to me - this breed are not big, so I assume they can get rather round very quickly without being overfed.

Oops sorry, my fault! Shouldn't have presumed they were fat, it just seems to be a common thing, people buy little piglets as there small and cute, they love cherish and generally over feed them, once they resemble a small hippo they decide they don't want them anymore and give away to anyone who'll have them.
Wasn't picking a fight  :innocent: honest

I just wondered if they were being given away expecting a forever home as alot of 'free to good home' adverts are.  Then I saw who's they are and was surprised he's giving away at all.
I'll ask him when I go into Wynnstay on Friday if he's there that day.
