sparkle
« on: August 19, 2012, 11:51:31 am »
I need something to add a bit of sparkle to some brown (Heb) yarn.  It's already spun so I can't use angelina - it needs to be a fine yarn which will knit in with the homespun.

Any ideas?   :knit: :knit: :knit:  teehee I've wanted to use that since it appeared  :yippee: :knit: :knit: ;D

I'm not a spinner or a knitter  :-\ but I used metalic thread a lot when card making  ;)
Would it be possible to twist the thread around the yarn to add a bit of spakle ?

Corr bloimey Karen   there's lots of lovely sparkley things there  :yippee:   It reminds me of going into fishing shops with my younger son who's very into fly tying - fishes seem to like glitzy stuff too.  I would need to estimate what length I would need to complete the shawl, maybe only using sparkley every alternate row - it's easy to knit with the two yarns together

Hi Goosepimple and thank you.  That is the same URL Karen gave, so that is obviously the place to go for sparkle  .
I'm starting to wonder now what effect using a non-stretch yarn along with a stretchy one will have on the finished garment.  :knit:

I hadn't noticed that.  Now I want to use this one.  Think, Lesley, think.  I know.  I haven't done any  :knit:  for a while as I am using extreme needles and they're too long to have while I'm lying on the sofa.  Maybe I should start  :knit:  something else on smaller needles.

If the metalic thread is plyed with the wool yarn once washed it will make a textured yarn as the wool curls up around it. Have you thought of using a sewing machine thread. they do nice metallics and have a bit more 'pull' to them.
The other idear is to thread small beads onto a plain sewing thread and either knitting this with your wool or plying, beads are a bit more fun and add interesting texture. Ok now can i use this :knit: :knit: :knit: :knit:

Hi Chris.  I hadn't thought of beads  .  I've not used them before - how many do you thread on?  I've never been quite able to picture this.  There's probably a Utube clip for it somewhere.  I can't get to the shops yet so everything will have to be bought online, and descriptions are often a bit lacking.  But I do like the beads idea - thank you.

The yarn I'm using has already been plied - I just want something to lift it a bit above the ordinary, as an afterthought.  :knit: :knit: :knit:  it's great isn't it

You can always re-ply, just remember to ply in the reverse direction of the last spin (if that makes sense). Beads you can add as many as you like, I thread onto a sewing yarn, and feed them along the thread as you work.  :knit: :knit: :knit: see used it again :excited:
