Loo rolls (well the cardboard bit inside)
is success down to the brand of loo roll you uses , I uses cheap stuff (tesco own brand)so their for i think the cardboard inner would be poorer quality so i havn't had much look with it as they went mould very quickly.

Any idear from other members?

I made some this year out of newspaper, havent planted them yet, just intending to drop the pot into the ground without disturbing the roots. only problem with loo rolls is they have no bottom to them so you would have to leave them on a tray.

you can cut one end 3-4 times and fold the bits over to make a floor. Didn't make a difference to the mould problem and general poor germination in them. Won't be trying it again I think. :&>

I had a mould problem with newspaper too. But don't really read papers in this house so not really a good 'source' of materials lol

I think it may be something in the cardboard, we tried them a few years ago and got 90% germination in Root trainers and less than 10% in cardboard loo roll tubes.

didn't make any difference which brand I was using, Linz - don't they have to add some glue to the paper pulp?

I was thinking along the lines of the cheaper stuff would have been 'recycled' and either added bleach to make whiter or no bleach then their for the bleach would have done something to it?

my frined had no problem with hers, but she grew all in them in the greenhouse, maybe the temperature makes a difference with loo rolls. Must ask her what brand she's been using. :&>

I only tried this method with loo rolls one year - I found that they didn't break down in the ground well enough to let the roots out, so either I need to stick to roottrainers, or change my brand!  :D

I understand some brands have anti-fungal properties to avoid your loo roll going mouldy. Not something you want to grow seeds in.  Rootrainers are our choice and we save the loo rolls for fire lighters - BBQ lighters in Summer.
