Routine vaccination of piglets.
« on: August 06, 2012, 01:34:18 pm »
We have a litter due soon and I've been googling. There's so much information out there I wish I hadn't started. What jabs does everyone give to their piglets as routine? If it makes any difference they are outdoor reared pigs that don't have contact with any other herds through shows etc.

No we haven't had any problems. My instinct is to steer clear of unnecessary medicine use but now I've looked into the subject my mind is boggled a bit.

We worm and routinely vaccinate all stock against erysepilas.
But, we do have moves off and on to shows, take visiting gilt/sows for service and have some pretty rare bloodlines that we wouldn't want to lose from our breeding herd.
If we had sheep, I think we'd vaccinate against clostridium in the pigs, as it can cause sudden death.
I think ones like parvo and pneumonia are only worth considering vaccinating against if you've had incidences or are in an 'at risk' situation.
A quick phonecall to your vet to discuss it would be a good idea though as they'll know what is/isn't in your area (and they don't usually charge for phonecalls  ;))

Agree with Robert, if you don't have a problem don't inject for the sake of it. I only jab for worms and the breeding stock get a jab of Selenium because we are defficient in this area and it has caused me problems in the past.

Thanks everyone. Our vets are not great with pigs so I didn't want to rely on their advice which is usually that the most expensive option is the one that you need.

Piglets are all wormed at weaning, then it depends on whether they are meat pigs or for breeding as to what they have after.  We vaccinate our breeding pigs once a year for Parvo and twice a year for Erysipelas  :) .  We don't vaccinate any of the fatteners with anything.
Our vets do a herd health plan for our livestock and all large animal practices should be able to offer this service to clients.  They take into consideration individual herds and recommend which vaccines are worthwhile giving depending on the circumstances.  If you have a closed herd then probably not much you need to vaccinate against.
If you vaccinated against everything out there you'd be bankrupt  ;D .
