Does anyone know if it is possible to inject a gilt to stop it getting pregnant after a mating?  We got up the field his morning to discover one of our store pigs got in to a pen with our pedigree gilts who are only 6 months old, he was having a great time with them.  Obviously I do not want them to carry the pregnancy through, due to age and the fact he was a x breed anyway.  If there is a injection I can get the vet to give them is there any long term effects that it may have on the gilt?  I will call the vet in the morning to ask, but just wondered if anyone has experience in this area.

I believe there is a jab that will make them abort but your vet will know best.
Get your fencing strengthened and keep boars away from gilts anyway, the smell of each other drives them mad and your boar might get taint if he's a porker due to increased hormones he's producing.

the jab is routinely used on cattle, but is v dangerous on ponies. no idea about pigs.

More stock fencing ordered and 8 store boars booked in for slaughter house on Monday! Going to call the vet shortly and see what they say about injection.

There is a jab you can give, can't remember timing of it now but you give it certain number of days after they've been served, doesn't always work though

Oh noes  :(   So sorry for you - that's a real headache, isn't it?

Our neighbouring farmer has had a hell of a year with his randy ram who will seemingly climb Everest for a quick shag.  The main lot were lambed in march, but many of last year's lambs also produced lambs in June.  Then, to his horror, the field behind our house now has 4 more tiny, weeny little lambs...   :o

I hear he is also booking a date at the slaughter house, and is now on the look out for a slightly less determined ram!  He has also been doing some field reinforcement work  ;)

Good news is we can use the cattle jab at day 10 after the boar got in!

Fencing on route!  Boar off to slaughter Monday!

Many thanks to all, will let you know if it works and any side effects!

the last time we had used it is vet administered     in theory you could be up the stick and use it on yourself    highly illegal :farmer:
