Fell Pony
« on: June 25, 2012, 08:04:51 pm »

I have been offered a nice Fell pony, he is 4yrs old and is by Heltondale Bonzo Boy out of Townend Sugar, just wondered if anyone knew any of his parents or relatives, he seems a nice quiet boy with nice manners and has been sat on and very lightly hacked. Would like to know if there is anything horrible in his genes that I need to know about, his previous owner left him at a livery yard and didn't pay her bills so the yard now wants to sell him.

Both these affixes are good old fell breeding so you should be okay. Hope he has been gelded!

I had a friend who showed top class fells. They were all of these two bloodlines and she used the geldings in her riding stables. Heltondale Bess comes to my memory. They are usually easy to train but can have a stubborn streak. Good luck with your new boy.

She does, two gorgeous ones

She's on holiday at the moment, so maybe not on here as much as usual. I'm sure she'll see this when she does get online.

-I am a Dales pony person myself!!  But ......I now have 4 Fell ponies, and two are Heltondale bred, and the other has Townend in her breeding.  I like the old fashioned looking pony  and both my Heltondale bred ponies have the mane and tail, plenty of feather and chunkiness I like.  The mare has just had a colt, and he is already looking like he will take after the others in width!!

Our Heltondale ponies are small - probably only 12.2hh, but they are good strong ponies, and can carry an adult easy enough.

I have a very close relative of this pony. There's certainly nothing untoward in the breeding.  Is he being sold by the breeder? And is he a Townend himself?

Make sure they are legally able to sell him. Was there provision in the livery contract for title to pass in the event of failure to pay, do they have his passport etc.
Our holding has Anglo Nubian and British Toggenburg goats, Gotland sheep, Franconian Geese, Blue Swedish ducks, a whole load of mongrel hens and two semi-feral children.

They signed over ownership to the farmer and also passport.
Collecting him next week so will post pics soon as possible.

I had a wonderful fell mare. My fab breed. She was 14hh with a massive thick mane that went well below her shoulder and a really thick tail. Even in the worst weather she never got properly wet. She had such personality I really miss her, she was put to sleep at 24 dude to cushings that didn't respond to treatment.

Good luck with your boy he sounds lovely!!
