What is you Favourite ?
« on: June 25, 2012, 08:43:55 am »
Don't get me wrong I like growing all veg. Even the stuff I HATE to eat ( Celery,Cauliflower, Sweet corn and Broad beans ::) ). My favourite things to grow are Carrots, Peppers sweet & chilli, Tomatoes and I think as of this year (first time) courgettes and pumpkins. I can't explain why, but I just get really existed at every stage of there development. It has nothing to do with  being my favourite to eat, I'm not that fond of sweet peppers and I've only tried pumpkin once and it was bloody horrible (willing to try again).  Am I a bit odd  ??? . I grow all the peas, beans, cabbages, onions but they don't have the same affect on me.
basically what I want to know is, dose anyone else have a favourite crop to grow or is it just me.

I like tomatoes because homegrown are just so much nicer than bought.

We grow salad stuff but I don't eat it much. I've grown aubergines, which are really pretty but, as Dan has said on here before, the best recipe for them is cut them into one inch dice and put them on the compost heap.

Carrots!  :carrot: :carrot: :carrot: :carrot: :carrot: :D

I think because they were so variable in quality at our old place, where we grew them for 10 years, but here our soil is so sandy we have had fantastic crops, long, even growth and very tasty.

Brassicas stress me, because of slugs, aphids and caterpillars.  >:(

For gardening pleasure or fun you can not beat digging up a potatoes and searching around to find every last one. I agree that growing pumpkins , butternut and courgettes are satisfying becuase of their quick growth - and the pride of filling a wheelburrow with a quick harvest of a couple of plants is great.

I am trying mellons this year even though I am not a great lover of them.

I love eating any of my home grown veg, the fact that it is picked , cooked and on the plate within the hour is great.

LEEKS!

I grow cabbage, Brussels, onions, potatoes, chard, beet root, etc but leeks are great, from seed to plate.

I start them growing in flower tubs in the greenhouse and then transplant them into the garden with a quick trim to the tops and roots. I planted some out yesterday and still have two more varieties in the greenhouse waiting for some room to come avalible in the veg patch in the next few weeks.

Happy growing everyone!

A large plate of broad beans or brussel sprouts with a knob of butter and dill  :yum: :yum: :yum: :yum: :yum: Heaven!..Though
Celery celery and even more celery,I absolutely adore it ;D fresh garden peas and vine tomatoes of plentiful varieties  :yum: :yum: :yum: home grown sweetheart and savoy cabbage-also with that knob of butter lol!And I always without fail have at least ten pepper varieties like Bhut jolokia,Hungarian sweet and hot peppers, apple peppers, red and green finger chillies, this year I have Chocolate habs,Trinidad scorpions to name but a few~I have locals whom love the chilli chutneys!

I can eat dill with anything as is so fragrant and water cress sandwiches are gorgeous! But my fav is certainly the broad beans, butter and fresh dill on top,tis making me dribble,I am going out to see if they are ready lol!

I love lettuce and salad leaves in any form or shape. It's the price to pay when I look in the shops and I'm so happy that I don't have to  ;D . It was better though before I had to beat the chickens to it  ::) . Courgettes and Hokaido squash are next, as you can watch them grow! Peas are lovely to watch , too, once they are over the delicate stage. A new addition is Tree Spinach, because of the lovely pink new foliage  :D :&>

I love all the salad types, mixed leaves, spinach, tomato, cucumber and especially spring onions which are so much tastier than shops.

I love sugarsnaps in stir fry but have to be quick as the boys pinch them to eat straight from the plant  ::)

The surprise every time the potato plants are dug up  ;D a big surprise last year, not 1 potato  :o

Just looking at a dinner plate and thinking I grew all this from seed is such a great feeling.

I would rather be given a dish of broad beans or new potatoes than a box of chocolates. I love all veg, though peppers and cauliflower I can take or leave alone.

Hehe, I loathe broad beans and wonder why they even bother putting them in the seed catalogues, but love cauliflower!

Next time you get a box of chocs send them to me and I'll send you some broad beans.  :D
