New Quail Run
« on: June 25, 2012, 07:54:46 am »
Finely got the new Quail run finished. They have always been in a small run that I move once a week on to a fresh bit of grass. Since we moved this has not been possible as our new garden is very steep. there has only been 3 spots in the garden flat enough for them, so they now have a permanent summer run next to the chicken Run (more of a walk through  ::) ).

Here is the half way stage.

Finished  (I still have to dig me some steps up to there run)

Here are my girl enjoying there new run. (it's not night just grey and overcast, so had to use flash)

They will go back into there smaller run for the winter as it sits under the kitchen window and has triple glazed sheets that fit one side and the back and half the top. So they get lots of protection from the winter weather. It will also give there summer run a well earned rest.

Looks great  ;D

They will love all that freedom. Hope to do something similar soon.

Have you wired under the ground ? ....... My friend made a smashing enclosure for hers but the rats dug under and had quail dinner. Mine are in large arks on the lawn but I have had to wire the run floors, which I hate but the rats have discovered us too and started burrowing  :(

They don't have wire under the floor. It would be impossible to do with all the (BIG) rocks. The sides are berried as much as it can be. I am concerned about rats getting in. I will be keeping a very close eye on them and there run for evidence .I have never seen any sign of them around the chicken run or garden in general .  The small run they spend winter in (the one they just moved out of) has wire on the floor.

Mmmmm ....... they worry me and although I love keeping quail, I don't like them in arks particularly but it is a job knowing how best to keep them safe and still giving them space and a natural life.

I think your pen looks smashing. Just keep a careful eye for runs. My friend found the runs but thought the rats were just eating the quail pellets ...... which they did for quite a while ...... not sure why they suddenly turned their attention to the little birds. :(
