acv question please.
« on: June 19, 2012, 07:32:28 am »
Hi, first time I've used apple cider vinegar, is it ok to use in galvanised drinkers? I'm only mixing to 100m per 10 litres.

Things I have read say you shouldn't use it in galvanised drinkers. but nothing was said about mix ratios of small amounts. Sorry I'm not being very helpful.

No, I don't think so. Use plastic drinkers. I can't remember the exact reason why the galvanised ones shouldn't be used. Guessing something to do with the reaction of the acid on the metal. I'm sure someone will know in more detail.

They go rusty so use plastic if possible.

They go rusty because the acidic vinegar dissolves the zinc galvanising and an overdose of zinc is not a good thing for any animal.

1% is the standard strength Zeeteecee and still too strong for galvanised drinkers as already said. We alternate ours at 1 week in 4, so they don't drink it continuously.

I'd hold off giving it until you have the new drinkers Zeeteecee. The first re-fill of a drinker in a new month has ACV at 1%. I have noticed it removes some worms when given occasionally. When we gave it continuously it did the first time and then the worms became resistant to the higher gut acidity, plus it costs a lot and we saw no benefit. We worm with Flubenvet regularly as well.
