Something different for the Gala tea tent
« on: June 17, 2012, 01:37:52 pm »
Our village gala is approaching (Sunday 1st July) and I'm looking for new ideas for home bakes to sell in our tea tent.

The village hall committee all supply 18 cakes and I usually make choc brownies, fairy cakes, sultana cake for slicing or similar. Other offerings include ginger bread-men, choc cakes of all types, pancakes with jam, victoria sponge.

What would you bake to sell in a tea tent? - ideally small individual cake type items.

Many thanks

What about whoopie pies or macarons?  Never tried making macrons but they look so pretty I shall have a go one day.

sell well have excellent profit margins if priced correctly!!!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Macaroons might be a no-no - nuts? Sorry, not being rude here, just we have to be careful about nuts - don't want our customers keeling over and making a mess in our lovely tea tent ;D

The small pavlovas sound great, but we don't have a fridge & we are open all afternoon - mind if the weather stays this 'hot' they'll be OK. Already had a discussion with the Env. Health officer about fresh cream cakes - not allowed.

Just looked up a recipe for lemon drizzle - yum, I'll just have to try that out before hand.

Any more ideas out there?

Tray bakes.

Really easy/quick/reliable. Cut easily into squares of whatever size you choose.

I make - banana, chocolate, vanilla, lemon, mincemeat and so on.  ;D

truffles?
thinking along the kiddie line at school we sell marshmallow tophats which go very quickly
another good, cheap quick sell is popcorn put into see through icing bags, tied with a pretty ribbon?
the unusual beetroot cake or courgette cake?

Mars Bar Slice/Squares
Kids love them (so do adults... :yum: :yum: )
Take 3 standard size mars bars chop into 3-4 pieces put in microwave safe bowl (I usually half melt the bars first)  add 2oz butter, 2 tblspn Golden syrup gently melt together 2-3 mins at medium zap. Don't heat on high as that can make the bars go like toffee.
Give it a mix, should be thick and hopefully no lumps... and then add 4 cups rice crispies - mix untill crispies well covered.  Turn into well greased foil-lined tin. 11" x 7" x 1" deep. Gently press flat.
Melt 4oz Milk choc - spread over the top. When cold cut into squares/triangles/fingers.
You are never to old to learn something new

Yes, the mars bar slices go down well ......I call them space bars!!  Choc fridge cake, made in a tray and sliced is popular.  Any sort of cup cakes, and tray bakes.  Individual lemon merangue pies, and loaf cakes (fruit, chocolate, even cheese, I have made)  Chocolate brownies, shortbread, millionaires shortbread.

What's next, no more milk in our coffee?  ::)  We had to send a few men involved in the village carnival barbeque on a course on how to flip burgers....
The mars bar slices sound good. Homemade chocolate covered corn flakes are great, too - very light and crunchy.

Ive devised a recipe for a very tasty apple and sultana cake if you'd like it. Its now doing the rounds in Queensland Australia thanks to my friend Sally who tried some when she visited us and fell in love with it. It can be eaten hot as a pudding with cream or custard, or as a cold cake. Both are as equally good.
Mary.

Just tried making chocolate beetroot muffins -they're delicious - even OH said they were good - though perhaps not sweet enough for him. That's a first, OH is definitely a savoury man  :innocent:
