Hi . we purchased 16 chicks that are growing nicely now and are full of fun and character. I was wondering. I have read that there is a way of sexing chicks quite accurate if you know the cross breed by colour.. If we have a Warren hen cross with a Light Sussex any one any idea what is wat??

I assume you having a warren cross that your looking at meat birds. why then does it matter what sex they are. Just eat the males and breed the females. Or eat the lot. Let us know how they turn out. Ive booked some sasso's but the wife is not keen too fast growing.

Warrens for eggs (doing well) Light sussex for oven. Dont realy matter wot sex but just interested thaught some one may know. All cocks for the oven

vent sexing is hard i cant do it. The females primaryflight feathers are ment to be bigger than the other wing feathers. but i would take a guess stick a leg ring on the ones that you think are male and see. good luck.

there is a way of knowing what is what sex wise by knowing the parents

Some breeds are autosexing or sex-linked so you can tell at hatching which are male and female. I think all the "Bars" are - legbar, welbar etc. The Black Rock is too. Since the Warren is a hybrid already, it might not work. But someone else may know different.

ahhhh understand now... at what age can you tell the cockerels from hens... I am sure at 4 weeks i can pick a couple out allready.. They have different legs and strutting.. Is this correct?? or am I just with them too long lol

I think you start to see differences about 4 weeks - the cockerels have thicker legs and bigger combs. Our Hubbards are 10 weeks and I've been able to tell for about three weeks, maybe, which are which. Not that this will influence their fate one iota.
