The Heat.
« on: May 30, 2012, 10:20:40 am »
My grandaughter was staying for the weekend and as usual she likes to play and walk Rascal. As it was shaded in the back garden he was in there with the door to the old cottage open so he could get out of the heat. Unknow to us she built herself a little coarse of jumps and had been playing games with him. She came in and right away we could see Rascal was in trouble. He had overheated and OH gave him ice cubes and covered him in a soaked towel. Turned out it was 26 degrees outside even in the shade. Emma was upset but we told her it was our fault for not checking just how warm it was. Will be more careful in the future. Now we are back to 10 degrees.

Hope Rascal is OK.  Its easy for them (and children) to get carried away playing and do too much in the heat.  I do agility and see it happening occasionally at shows - and thats with adults in charge not kids!  Luckily my dogs are a stubborn lot and if they feel its too hot they just won't budge!  Bit frustrating when you've driven an hour and a half to a show!  But at least they're safe.  :dog:

If you cover a dogs back with a wet towel you are effectively sealing in the heat.  It's better to get them into a bath of water up to their arm pits or lay them on a wet towel.
Sounds like wee Rascal recovered fine though.  ;D  It's a worry, but we all welcome the sun, so just have to be careful - for ourselves and our children too I guess.

Mine were hot last weekend too - and jumped into my newly made pond - stirring up the mud that was just beginning to settle. ::)  Think I'll have to fence it off.  But then it is handy for doing water retrieves I must admit ;D
Always have been, always will be, a WYSIWYG - black is black, white is white - no grey in my life! But I'm mellowing in my old age

Meg and Tess like to wade in the ditch here if it's hot. TBH, they take it pretty easy now that they are more mature. Well, older  ;D

Hope Rascal is OK - I suspect he's in good company and lots of folk overdid it in the sun. There were some very red backs and shoulders in Tesco on Monday  ::)
