Hi all , our lovely chicks are doing well but one has a mucky bum - tried removing it gently (euw!) but stuck. is this anything to worry about (having read threads about bunged up lambs) to the extent that I should remove with warm water or something, or has it just sat on someones sloppy poo and it will work its way off? Think it could be something called Pasty Vent (might not be correct spelling/term). Basically you need to remove with warm water. Be gentle, let it soften and dont pull. Use cotton wool and try not to wet the whole chick. Think they can die from it because they cant pass any motion if it becomes completely sealed. Check they are not in a draught and are comfortably warm. Should clear in a few days .... check regularly.

What ITH says. Gotta remove it and it can be caused by them getting too cold (weirdly)

Done - and that does make sense JayKay - Ive been struggling to keep the brood box up to the first week recomended 35 degrees (got a 150 w ceramic bulb and think we probably could have done with 250) although their behaviour has suggested that they are OK (all perkily wandering around doing their own thing - neither huddling under bulb, nor trying to escape it). Anyway clean rear end now and watching carefully. Many thanks.
