Hi every one,what would the average going rate be for 15/16 week old lop x saddleback gilts be.The reason i ask is someone i know is interested in swapping some hebridean sheep for 2 of my pigs,the offer is a 5yr old ewe with twin ewe lambs for 2 of the gilts.I have never bartered livestock before and want both sides to be happy in any deal, i cant work it by what they have cost in feed as i havent kept records, any ideas many thanks.

Depends on where you are, of course, but I wouldn't pay more than £40 for a cross-bred pig at that age.

I think your on to a bargain just looking at the price of lamb at the moment.Even though you won't get a huge amount of meat off a Hebridean they're still worth more than pork and if you keep them a while they'll make very tasty Hoggett and kill out at a good weight. Are the lambs male or female? If one is a ewe lamb its a definate bargain.

I'd expect £40-ish for a saddleback cross weaner at 8 weeks, so if you've fed them for a further 8 weeks you'd expect something for that - maybe an extra £15 for two sacks of feed per pig?

I've no idea what a 4-crop Heb ewe is worth with two lambs at foot. As rsf says, the value of the lambs will differ according to their gender.
