A bad morning for us
« on: May 07, 2012, 02:45:32 pm »
Went into check goats this morning and found Ruairi (Gaeilge for Rory) our 14 month old Nubian Buck on the floor head twisted back looking terrible, went straight to vet and we did what we could but he was too far gone and we had to put him to sleep.  Totally devastated as he was born here and we were keeping him as our breeding buck and he had such a lovely character, checked all around where they were grazing yesterday and nothing to be found, his mother looked off colour as well so we gave her an Epsom salts drench and glucose just to be safe but she seems fine, all the other goats seem fine, same as usual and they were all grazing together.

Just fed up  :(

That's Ruairi in the middle his mum behind him and Pluirin (Gaeilge for snowdrop) in front :goat:

Poor boy, so sad when this sort of thing happens, we lost a lamb through Grain sickness a couple of years ago and our then vet (since changed ) failed to recognise it and treated it for staggers, all it needed was a shot of thyamine , it's neck was pulled back in an un-natural pose too.

Yes CCN would certainly have those symptons. It will also happen very fast. Have they been under some sort of stress, change of diet ..anything can cause it. I lost a ewe last autumn to it, and despite her still being upright when diagnosed and quickly treated, she died in the night.

You are not really at fault for that, it is really difficult to spot AND treat in time. I am not sure if keeping some Vit B ready for such situation will help, as it is quite rare and the Vit B will probably go off in the meantime...

How terribly sad for all concerned - especially as the cause isn't certain so you can't help wondering 'what if...' all the time.

So sorry .....its such a shock to find them like this, and even worse when nothing can be done for them.
