Well woke at 6.15am to bottle feed kids, Maisey the mum only has one nipple, so she needs a little help! Went in and shes been souring all night, seemed happy and fine at 9am, but there was an awful mess up the walls all over...so complete clean out, fresh straw to keep her warm, as it has decided to hail and be blowing a gale here in wales! so seperated her from the kids and will have to bottle feed them today to keep them clean and free of distressing mum - shes completely off her food - will see how she is tomorrow morning if still the same do you think i should tell the vet? shes obviously not happy. the kids are nearly 3 weeks old, so would have thought any birth issues would have popped up by now. her nipple is still open, do you think an infection could cause her to scour?
then....pip has also decided to kid on the coldest day in weeks, there goes my theory on them waiting until a nice day! shes properbly a few hours off yet, but is making more noise then maisey, maybe shes closer than i think...keep checking her every half an hour as 2 month old baby cant stand the pushchair that long!
bottle feeding 2 lambs too, so an eventful day to be had here!!

Basically, what colour is the scour ?  Usually, scour that is everywhere is as a result of gas build up in the gut.... caused by food excess.

Based on what you have said, I would remove all food from her except hay.  dose her with Kaolin & Morphine... get this from the chemist.....probably 2 doses will be needed,  30 ml first dose & second one about 3 hours later.
She should feel better then.   Kaolin cannot harm her b ut will often cure the issue.
Most vets approve of this as first aid treatment.

As long as the faeces are stiffening up (!) tomorrow, then repeat again once.  You shouldn't need to call the Vet if this is the case.

Yes bottle the kids..... she won't be interested in them but kepp them next to her if possible.

Offer warm water rather than cold if you can.... you can add glucose to it for energy.

Thank you for youre advice, it is very helpful, i dont have any Kaolin and all chemists are shut today, unless i drive and hour, with the possibility one in open. I cant leave while pip is kidding just incase! I will have to go in first thing and get some. Have made sure that shes warm, put the warm water out, and fingers crossed it will just pass. She has like i guess a light chocolate colour, a bit like milky chocolate ( i just read the other post about scouring) She doesn't look impressed!
Kids seem happy, so fingers crossed!!

That's useful to know and makes perfect sense now you have said it - about the explosive scour = gas build up from excess food. Thank you  :)

Sounds like kaolin & morphine are a useful thing to have on standby? is it over the counter/how do you go about buying it? is morphine a prescription only Vet job?

My mother swore by Kaolin and Morphine - we always had some in cupboard, its obviously marvellous for humans and goats, stinks to high heaven but great when you have taken it

Kaolin & Morphine   is an over the counter purchase..... the morphine element is very small  but does give relief to a goat & human for that matter with an aching gut.!!!!

I give 2 doses before calling the vet if no improvement..... it usually works.... unless there is an underlying cause.
The timimng is important.... 4 hours apart...... you are not losing time before calling the Vet.

a must have in all goat keepers kits along with slippery elm (just add to a little milk) both readily available and both work well on goats.

Thanks both - will get some of each in for those times when the goats are in need

They willl LOOOVE the Kaolin and morphine... mine lick it off the syringe.... I guess it's the morphine???

One other medicine to have handy is INTRADINE, an injectable (into the muscle) stuff for cocci type scouring for growing kids and lambs. (It will be enough to get it from the vets when you actually need it, but you may have to ask for it, as otherwise they will only give you Vexxocan).

I have read about slippery elm too - where do you get it and in what form does it come????

Ok, have used kaolin and morphine and also Intradine before. But slippery elm? What do you use that for?
