? Will we have a poor fruit season
« on: April 21, 2012, 02:56:23 pm »
After heavy showers and strong wind I just popped out as the sun is out.
there are large flakes of ---- falling. Not snow but fruit blossom petals.

My guess is that the very heavy rain and almost gales have stripped the trees of blossom and it was too cold for the insects to do their stuff. After last years bumper crop my guess is that this year will be poor.

Does this make sense?

i dont know, but i havent seen many pollinators about, its still pretty cold here for cornwall, so ive delayed planting out flowering veg. my blackthorn has loads of blossom, much more than last year, but my apple trees are only just breaking out.

same here, the plums set about 2 weeks ago but there were some frosts around so it will be a nervous wait to see what will happen. all the apple trees are just about to break any day now.

we lost the blossom early last year and had a 40% drop in fruit (plums - hence my username  ;)   ) - we've had warnings in the Vale of Evesham that its likely to be a poor year for our most famed fruit, the humble plum, looks like we wn't be making much wine this year...
