Ideas please - What pigeons?
« on: April 20, 2012, 12:00:34 am »
After labouring for two years on and off, Pigeon Palace is coming together and BH is wondering what breed(s) to get.

We were inspired to clear out and refit the pigeon loft after seeing a flock of white fantails, but now it's ready he's thinking maybe to get something 'a bit more exotic'.

Ideas anyone?

It sounds as if you are not talking about breeds for eating which would be the only reason I would get pigeons

There are some very fancy ones (and fancy names  :D) here fancy pigeons which might give you some ideas. What I ignorantly call all fantails seem to come in more colours than white. And then you can get rollers and tumblers, which I'd don't think look anything special, but fly interestingly  :)

I really want some doves or fantails but I think the sparrowhawk would have a field day with anything so conspicuous - he zooms between the buildings making me and the sparrows jump as it is  :o

I always had a vague fancy for racing pigeons but never kept them. Perhaps now I'm retired ;)
There are certainly some lovely birds on that sight though some I think may need specialist care.
