« on: April 18, 2012, 01:50:45 pm »
YAY!!! Six out of seven cuckoo maran chicks hatched from Rosie Posie's eggs.

The seventh one made a start and chipped a hole but didn't get any further.

Why wouild that happen?

Good stuff - maybe it did not want to come into the world with a name like Rosie Posie Cuckoo Maran.    anymore due?

Our first clutch of ducks are at about 38 days now so I keep braving the rain to see if we have any ducklings. There are over 60 eggs being sat on - bit of an accident as we bought 5 new mums to add to our 2 survivors from last year. They were very cheap and the plan was to keep a week or so for the pot but the OH has been with her daughter for nearly 3 weeks waiting for her overdue grandson. I've been making duck hutches for the new ducks but should really kill the 3 new ones who are not sitting 24/7 on their eggs.

Incorrect humidity is the usual reason. Do you have a humidity display?

6 out of 7 is a good result.

Pics of the chicks please!

6 out of 7 is a good result. May be humidity too low at hatch time Suziequeue and it stuck to the membrane, but more likely the mother's diet and the chick wasn't strong enough or didn't have enough energy to get out. To get the best hatch you may find feeding rearer pellets and plenty of fresh greens 5 days before you start collecting the eggs until the last one gets results. Layers pellets are formulated for strong shells and yellow yolks, neither of which you want for hatching. What you do need is just sufficient shell and plenty of vitamins plus trace elements which is the formulation of growers pellets. We actually mix layers to rearers 1:3 just to be more sure of the calcium levels. Rearer is 1%, layers is 3%.

That's much better than any incubator!

Yes - she's very good with them. Very protective. DH managed to sneak a pic yesterday but you can just see her coming back into the coop to see what's going on ;) She didn't half give DH a telling off apparently!!  ;D ;D
