I also have a CPH which is not conected to any land, an 0700 number.  If I have to submit a CPH it is of the land involved in the movement. My land is all rented so has its own CPH.  Simpels ?

Hi all
I don't know whether anyone can help me - we have just started making homemade sausages from home and would like to get a cph no so that we could possibly buy from market and take straight to slaughter if the right animals came to hand.  Does anyone know if I can get a CPH no without having the land on which to keep animals?
I would appreciate anyones comments
Thankyou

Most abbatoirs only slaughter pigs on specific days, usually Mondays for some reason. I think you would have to have somewhere to keep your pigs between market day and then.

Why don't you buy direct from the abattoir?  Our local one sells to the general public so you wouldn't need to have a CPH.

To be honest I don't know. I was trying to give other options for the OP. I haven't checked with the abattoir about pigs recently.

The last items we bought from our local slaughter house was a lamb and a whole beef rump - but that was a couple of years ago. At that time it was cheaper than buying the equivalent from the local supermarket (Tesco)  or our nearest butcher.

The last lot of pigs we had slaughtered had varying costs back in 2008/9 - 2* 6 month old pigs cost about £52 and an older boar was £24 and 2 older sows £74.

If the OP wants to make sausage, but doesn't have any land to grow on weaners, or a trailer to move them, then I think they'd be better off buying from the abattoir than have the hassle of buying at the mart, paying for the transport from mart to abattoir and then paying for the slaughter. But I haven't done the costings - it depends where the mart is located, where the abattoir is etc. The OP should do a bit of research locally. I do know that there aren't as many local abattoirs down south as we have up here. Within 60 miles of our farm we have a choice of 3  - the nearest is only about 14 miles away, that can make quite a difference to the costings and then the profit they can make from their final product.

As i understand it you don't need a CPH if you're buying in carcasses only if you are buying live animals to bring on, but beware you can't kill at home and then sell on its against the law so as advised by the others buy you carcasses from the abbattoir and so long as your prep areas meet regulations you can continue without CPH.

You would have to give the abbatoir notice anyway if you want animals slaughtered, you can't just turn up.
The best thing, I think, would be to contact someone who rears pigs and pay for the whole, slaughtered carcasse. And, yes, straight from the abbatoir, that may turn out cheaper and you would have ALL the meat from the pig. Whereabouts are you?

i think you are all missing the point with this        they are making sausages at home       and wanting to buy pigs at a market  to convert to there home made sausages
nobody has asked if they have licenced premises for this activity
from every report of pigs being sold at market they are way below true value
one thing saying x y or z for a carcase but do convert that to price per kilo and it gives an idea of what they are talking about £100 for a 40 kilo carcase could be £300 for a 100 kilo carcase  and also gives others an idea of what they could get
or do i look to far into things :farmer:

Hi
Thanks everyone for your comments - we have been licensed through environmental health to make and sell sausages from home - so that is covered - I have spoken with Rural Payments Agency and now have a CPH no but will look into costings thanks.
