Parsnips for Sheep?
« on: March 28, 2012, 11:46:28 am »
I've just cropped a whole heaped wheelbarrow of Parsnips. Way too many for us but I've read it's ok to give Parsnips to sheep as a treat, my questions:

Should I only offer them to the ewes without lambs at foot, or ok to put in the field for ewes with lambs as well?

Do I need to chop them up at all? Don't want a choking hazard.

Do I need to remove the greens?

Yup, a good English Heritage Parsnip. And you'd be very welcome to fill your boots!
(or some other receptacle    :D   ).

I've never had much luck growing Parnips so this time I went mad with the seed and planted thousands of them. I've got a 100L wheelbarrow literally overflowing with them. Cooked some up, very tender, but I've more than even my freezers will take........

I have never fed them but if you can feed beet then I can't see why not I would also think chopped is a good idea but as to size who knows!

*wistful sigh* I don't suppose you're anywhere near Northampton for me to raid your wheelbarrow....? I likes parsnips

Sorry I can't answer your questions!
But I've seen sheep and lambs in fields of stubble turnips - no chopping up/removing greens/etc there so.....?
