Lely Hayzip
« on: March 26, 2012, 07:16:26 pm »
At the weekend we bought ourselves a bit of a 'project' Lely Hayzip for £60. It's in a bit of a state but the gearing seems sound and most of the tattiness seems to be because of multiple layers of paint clogging up the works, said layers peeling off everywhere. (see attached piccies)
We've got all the tines off (some of the nuts and bolts have seen better days) and will be giving the whole frame a power wash, paint deflake and a good oiling.

However we have some queries:
What is the difference between a Haybob and a Hayzip? Both seem to be able to spread the hay out and then gather it together.

With our Hayzip the tines are held in the ring by a bracket which is on a sprung rod. The rod goes through the middle of a plastic attachment and according to the holes in the tine bracket it looks like it should be possible to re-orientate the tine by 90 degrees using the sprung rod and twisting the whole assembly (2nd piccy might be more illuminating then my attempt at a wordy description.)
Basically we cannot make the sprung rod twist.
Should we be able to remove the sprung rod by removing the pin (other side of the spring) and then withdrawing the rod out of the plastic attachment?

Any help would be gratefully received

hayzip and haybob are brand names both do the same job  you will need to source a lely dealership to TRY and locate part
the pin on a spring that rotates or should rotate changes the spread pattern from rowing up to spreading  the tines were expensive  20 years ago and you had to clean and lubricate the sprung pins or they would not work
you need two gates as well to form the rows and the cover for the PTO shaft or hay will wrap round the shaft
good luck you will need it
they also made a haymax as well    i think i still have an instruction book  sorry it wont be cheep
the rod is rusted in the bush that is why you cant move it    DO NOT USE HEAT  the bush will be shagged then alright if you can get new ones :farmer:

Hi Robert
Thanks for the reply
Yes we do have the gates and  the cover for the PTO shaft, also the wheels -  we had already removed them before getting to the tines.

OH is enjoying the challenge...!!!
