Do woodpeckers ever use nestboxes - I rather doubt it but this morning I watched our visiting woodpecker have his breakfast and then proceed to one of those concrete like nestboxes for a robin - so a large opening and he spent a minute or so turfing out straw and feather - so I opened the door and he flew off, I never usually do that but was afraid he my turf eggs out - any thoughts?

Apparently woodpeckers go into nest boxes from the bottom ie peck through the wood if not reinforced with metal, to help themselves to someone else's eggs and nestlings.  Presumably this one was raking through the nesting material to see if there was anything edible in there
