Mineral bucket - horses and sheep
« on: March 06, 2012, 02:01:50 pm »
Anyone found a gp mineral bucket that can be used with sheep and horses?  I understand sheep are intolerant of copper (although someone posted elsewhere that shetlands need high copper in diet ???). I will be rotating horse grazing with sheep and either wanted to avoid having to lug and change buckets (or I might forget). I may even graze them together (if I can trust my mares not to stampede over them).

I think it was shetlandpaul said they needed to put copper out for sheep on Shetland.

Some breeds of sheep are extremely intolerant of copper, Texels being one such, and some need it, Mules being one of those.

Red rockies is ok for horses but not sheep.  Yellow Rockies is ok for sheep but I am not sure about horses - someone who does will be along soon.

Sorry not to be more help!

seconded, yellow fine for any stock (tho anything needing extra copper might do better with a different one as long as no other copper intolerant stock can get access)

we only use the red ones because the land is very poor in copper. don't use them if your land is fine. be very careful it would be ashame to poison your sheep. ours were showing the signs of deficiency. the vet feed man and very expert neighbour recommended it.

I was in scats/ mole valley farmers in bridgend s/wales the other day and they were selling a supplement lick suitable for both horses and sheep. I can't remember the name but they are out there and you could always give the store a call for the name of it.
