Mangalitzas - what age/weight do you send for slaughter
« on: February 29, 2012, 01:54:02 pm »
Hi,

We have a couple of Magalitzas approx 14 months old which by my reckoning using a piece of string weight around 80kilo's. Whilst just browsing the web I found several sites talking about sending them for slaughter at around 120 kilo's at least. If you've have any what weight have you sent them at?

what you will need to do is find a slaughterhouse that will do them and what limit they have for weight also if they skin them or try to dehair them  they are not referred to as sheep pigs for nothing     mangalitzas are a fattie pig they can produce over 70 liters of rendered fat per pig and if they skin it you will lose a lot  there cooked hams are Devinne with a smidgen of horseradish sauce :farmer:

Hi Robert - we've got an abattoir sorted, Richard of Howden, they know they are hairy!  Arl is going to butcher and pack them for us. I was just wondering whether I'd be sending them too early at 80 Kg.

going by other breeds from 80 kilos upwards does not take as long as getting to 80 kilos also depends on what you are feeding them and how much it is going to cost to put that 40 kilos on and they are a slow breed
your pigs your decision :farmer:
