Hi all!

I've read on here of late the fees charged to collect dead sheep.
I thought it would be the same all over the country but it may be worth some of you checking, but certainly on the inside cover of my flock register book there are details of free collections.
I quote from my book.....
'FALLEN STOCK
Sheep and goats can be collected free of charge provided they are over 18 months or with at least 2 permanent incisors.
Sheep 01823 337922
Goats 0800 525890'.

Might be just somerset that does this, but worth you all checking. Spending over the odds for vets fees is one thing, spending over the odds for a corpse is plain daft

You may find the scheme still running down there but the funding has run out up here and we have to pay for all of them now.  It was part of the Scrapie Testing Scheme - the animals had to have died within the last 24 hours and would be tested for scrapie when collected.  The silly thing was, any farmers who thought there might be scrapie in their flocks would of course not avail themselves of the free collection, in case scrapie was found...

I think the NFSCo charge me just under 20 quid, and the hunt kennels much less, its just whether I have time to drop em off myself if they are going to the kennels...

not much in somerset if you take it to the hunt kennels but £40 if they collect. Fromevale charge about £40 for collection as well. With some hunt kennels you have to get there in the morning before 9am.
I have noticed that the record book says free collection for sheep over 18 months but I have read that it no longer applies (I think on the DEFRA site)

We are in the NFSCo as well. they are good and the collection money is taken by direct debit, Also the DERFRA boys dont come a knocking as often cause it gets recorded back to them

Local Knackeryard collects dead sheep/goats for 16 pounds (plus VAT), all quite reasonable IMO. They come out within 48 hours, but usually for mine they are here within the day. I am not a member of any scheme, and it only costs a pound or so more if they have to shoot it first.

At least £30 per lamb or goat here just for collection.

can be worth shopping around. in some areas there will be more than one knacker man collecting and in those areas it can become much cheaper. Although that said some time having a decent working relationship with the knacker can make life much easier so chopping and changing can back fire.

In east yorks £24 for the knackers to come out and shoot and collect a goat - were here within 3 hours of calling them

Matt, I had Avocet my old nanny in the garage waiting for 3 days because no-one local could come out. It was horrible because she was like a pet more than anything else. In that week we had Avocet die and 2 cats killed on the road - was starting to think I must have been really bad in a past life

Here we have nothing-nobody will even accept dead sheep for disposal. Can't even bury when the ground is frozen solid 6 months of the year.one of the suggested solutions is that each farmer have a inspected incinerator worth thousands or dig a huge deep pit cased in to prevent leakage
