Help for a novice!
« on: January 03, 2012, 09:50:57 pm »
Ok, so I drink a not inconsiderable amount of wine. I bought a couple of plastic whatsits with bungy thingies to make my own wine. Which, is probably apparent to the more intelligent of you, I have never done before. (Although my tee-total mother makes wicked elderflower champagne, and my father always had beer brewing.) All the recipes I've googled require some brewers yeast or whatever it is. Can a few of you experienced winos run me through the process and ingredients?

Chin chin!  ;D

Hiya Dizzy,

Tony makes a bit of wine (plum jerkin they call it in our neck of the woods) and it comes up at 17% proof in its first year and gets stronger the longer you leave it. He uses a country wine kit, I can get some more info and FB it to you if you like? He's got a caravan out the back with all his plastic things with bungs and various metal things that crush and press but as you know, the livestock is my domain - the wine is his and neither of us know much about each other's hobbies!

I have one or two books on wine-making that you would be welcome to. Pm your address if you would like them.

I have bought the kit, mostly from amazon as shops do not seem to stock much for home brewing around here, and have a freezer full of nettles but just keep putting it off...my uncle and dad always made thier own beer.....I just need that push...I like anything thats cheap and easy!!!!

Once you start you will become addicted (to the making and hopefully not the drinking) of home-made wine. So get started ;D I would advise starting with supermarket, unsweetened fruit juices. They will give you a return in just a few months.
As for equipment, your local re-cycling centre will have loads of glass demi-jons at 50p-£1 each. The only other vital thing is a food grade fermenting bucket, cheap enough at a home-brew shop. All else you will buy over the years.

I could not find a home brew bucket, funnily I do have one without a lid, I used it all the time for other things...maybe since last year when I looked, there will be more shops with home brew stuff.....I keep going to do it then something stops me and its NOT time!!!
