How heavy should a Torwen Ram Lamb weigh
« on: December 03, 2011, 08:11:28 pm »
I have a little Torwen Ram Lamb just wondered how heavy should he be at 6-8months old; I weighed him the other day he was only 32kg,  he was bought in with a couple of others a mixed breed lot... so not sure of his birth date. Don't think he or the others had a good start in life.He seems quite tiny  ???

I was intending to send him to market but think maybe it will be a case of sell the best and eat the rest.  I don't want to send him the abbatoir if he's under weight.

He's called Twit as he has a habit of getting his head through the stock fencing and not being able to untangle his-self. ::) ::)  He goes round the pen at ninety miles an hour. His white markings over his eyes gives him a real comical look and the tags he has are too big and hang down like to big earings.

32 kg is a reasonable weight for that age, especially if he's had a bad start in life.
The deciding factor in whether you send him for slaughter is whether he is fat or not . Only you can tell, but if he is pure bred, then he most likely is fat at that weight.
However, if he is a lot smaller than the rest, I would not put him in at market as he will spoil the others if put in with them, and may not get a good price if sold on his own.
If you have the option then I would say he's definitely one for the freezer. He won't take up too much room and Welsh sheep are usually delicious.

Thanks Landroveroy

Although small he is in fair condition.

I have three ewe lambs in the next paddock and he's runing up and down the fence as they must be in season... ::) so time for him to go before he runs it all off or manages to get over the fence and see's to them...
