This looks like the ideal forum for us. We have owned a small farmhouse, in the Haute Vienne region of France, for 4 years. It only has a hectare of land, but should easily meet our hobby style needs. We currently divide our time between France and Lincolnshire, with visits every 6 weeks. We managed to spend three months of the summer in France, last year, and intend to do the same this year. The hedge laying course, completed two years ago, has paid dividends, with stands of hazel turned into thick barriers. The French were both puzzled and amused at the "damage" we appeared to be doing. The next summer, they realised that this crazy Englishman had a point, that was certainly preferable to the miles of blue string they use.
We already have the vegetable plot in production and plan to dig a pond, plant some trees for firewood and keep some chickens and a couple of pigs. Clearly, the pigs and chickens will wait until we are permanently ensconsed: probably next year. We are not seeking to be self sufficient: merely to have a productive hobby during our forthcoming retirement. We look forward to reading and contributing.
