Hello everyone 

Does anybody have a grasp on pygmy goat colour genetics?

We think we have successfully mated our Hermione to Runner as she has a waxy plug even though we have not actually seen them mating.

I was wondering what colours the kids might be seeing as it will be such a long wait to meet them! 

Hermione is ginger coloured with a white 'belt' and Runner is black with some patterns like frosting to the nose and a white spot/belt.

Anybody any idea what colour Hermione actually is? And what colour kids the two could produce?

From my experience they can be like mum or like dad or a bit of both - we had triplets last year one light, one dark and one in the middle - so it's all a bit of a mix I think

our (limited) experience is like Brucklays' ...
our mum is a pedigree Toggenburg, dad a pedigree Bagot
the three kids are brown like mum, have toggie faces with a slight "flash" of white like dad has, and some white patches here & there on their sides (like dad)

so you may well get a pick & mix of colours (how exciting!)

I call that a "mealy muzzle" Snowstorm is generally used for ears- when they are speckled with white.

Have always found that colour is generally mixed- BUT there can be exceptions. If you select a colour enough and keep breeding with it, it will eventually hold that you get more of that colour. I have a lot of cream AN's- and that is because my old male was bred by someone who liked cream AN's best, and she only keep cream ones! I have also seen black AN's breed up to 3 or 4 generations of jet black with snowstorm ears.

I don't know about pygmies, but when I took my Sanaan (white) to be mated to a British Alpine (black with white face markings) I was told that the off-spring would be one colour or the other.  Curry is white like mum but has a black smudge on one knee.  Mind you, he has definite Alping tendencies - jumps on anything and is a great escape artist.

Yes in the Swiss dairy breeds it's very unusual to get anything other than the standard colours. Roans are lovely, but very, very rare. I know someone who has a nice one, and we have a (nearly) British Saanen crossed with a British Toggenburg who is roan. But she's not a nice roan- not the distincive colour, but instead she just looks like she's a grubby shade of white! In the winter she gets dark patches under her eyes when she has her winter coat.

I think it will be lucky dip, the parents' parentage could come thru as well, or even further back, all in the fun of unknown ancestors
