Dog expert please
« on: October 16, 2011, 01:32:29 pm »
I am considering buying a poodle puppy.

It will be the first dog I have had for several years but have had rescue dogs in the past.  I want a dog just for companionship and enjoyment and now have plenty of time on my hands to take on the commitment.

What should I be looking out for in a pedigree puppy?

thanks
Sally

First of all an accredited breeder. Then you can be more than reasonably sure of the pup's "credentials". Also you will have a signed agreement, if the puppy is not what you were expecting/ you find in later years you can't keep him, the breeder will have him back (in not what you were expecting, the breeder cannot guarantee success in the show ring!) But they will have him back.
Always insist on meeting the mother and reassuring yourself that she is healthy and friendly and, if possible the father, or, at least, find out about him and make sure of his temperament.
Poodles are sweet dogs, very intelligent, full of fun and need plenty of occupation, rather like a border collie.
Good luck in your search :)

Hi,

Yes get one from a KC assured breeder - make sure they have all the health tests - not just just the minimun requirements - go and visit a few shows / fundays to get an idea of temperament of the dogs.  Go and visit breeders to meet their dogs - they should welcome you to come and visit with no obligation.

See puppy with mother and rest of litter - ideally see dad too.

Dont be afraid to say no to the first puppy you see if it doesnt feel right!

Discover Dogs at Earls Court would be an excellent way of meeting all 3 sizes 12/13th nov I think

Poodles in Need often have young poodles looking for homes - may have something suitable

Hope this helps
