Getting labels off
« on: August 04, 2011, 10:21:47 pm »
An appeal to the general wisdom that is TAS  ;D

We splashed out and bought a couple of havy base stockpots (having suffered burning on our last lot of chtney making  >:( ) However unfortunately the pots arrived with a sticky label attached to the inside of the pot covering the bottom completely, We tried hot water, boiling water, fairy liquid and petrol........

Any tips on how to get rid of the bl**dy things?

Thanks
Tish

Tish,
You can buy sitcky stuff remover but to be honest I have never really found that it works.  I always use WD 40 and a bit of elbow grease, or maybe thats a lot of elbow grease.

Good old Brillo pads...sad to say I do not retain information but I know that some glues come off easy if soked in cold water and some need to be soked in very hot water...something to do with the chemical process!! trouble is, like tatoes, if you put hot water on the pan where tatoes have been, you set the starch and so it becomes harder to shift!! Cold or hot water????

nail varnish remover once most of the paper has been scraped off with brillo pad. It works on all things glass, not sure how metal will respond though!  :&>

You have to scratch through the surface of the lable first as the glossy face is waterproof, then try nail varnish remover, have you tried boiling it on the stove ? this should melt the glue enough to soften it's grip.

I used shaving foam to remove the glue & paper bits off some velux windows. The glue was that stretchy stuff that they use to stick stuff on the front of magazines, but it had gone rock hard. The shaving foam re-hydrated it enough to make it flexible enough for it to peel off, but it did take several hours. I find that hair conditioner is also good for removing labels off glass and pottery.

Thanks for all the tips  ;D

One label has succumbed to the mixture of petrol, fairy liquid and hot water!

The other WILL give in to elbow grease!

Cheers
