Medium sized pigs?
« on: July 19, 2011, 09:11:17 pm »
We're cutting down our herd of Kunes to 4 or 5 females our stud male and a castrated male.  We're considering of getting a medium sized breed so put to either our Kune boar or our friends Kune/GOS boar.  What would be the best sort of breed to buy?  We want them for meat and not to sell on to anybody.  We'd get them as weaners so they can learn to respect the electric fence lol

Any ideas?

Why are you not using your Kunes for meat?  We've had some amazing meat from ours this year & already some requests from friends for the next lot.

I know that some folks think they can be too fatty, but it's just like traditional pork & tbh no more than 1 & 1/2 inches of fat at the thick parts (not like the skinny, flacid, pale, poor welfare stuff sold in some of the supermarkets  ::) ).

What about a Berkshire ? Apparently it makes a nice cross, not tried it myself......yet  ;)
I know of someone who has a Tamworth sow that crosses with a KK boar and she rears the piglets for pork.
The only pigs I have which don't get on with the Kunes are OSB's - (Large Blacks, Berkshire, Tamworths - all fine) but that could just be a personality clash  ;)
Anything would work really - just pick something you like the look of  ;)

I do use mine for meat :) we're rehoming 2 castrated boars and a female to a friend of mine and keeping 4 females, our stud boar and a castrated boar as our breeding stock.  The reason why we're looking into a bigger breed is to turn the field quicker and to slaughter as they'll get to size quicker.  We'll continue to breed the Kunes as the meat is very nice but need the field ploughing faster than than the Kunes are doing it

Mangalitzas? They're small/medium sized and good rooters. I bet they'd look cute too!
