Goat milk in Fife
« on: July 12, 2011, 03:22:50 pm »
so now that i have everything sorted, it appears that i am going to have plenty of milk......

now i know that i cant 'legally' sell it, but 2 questions:

1. does anyone near me want to informally buy any?
2. what are the 'rules' surrounding selling goats milk?

many thanks

Don't know about Scotland,  but in England, you can sell the milk described as 'pet milk produced to human milk standards'.  The important thing is the words Pet Milk must be unmistakeable.... after all you don't know what people do with purchases when they leave you.... and it must only be sold to the end user's owner (the human).

Yes, as far as I believe, you can sell up to 5 litres a day at the "farm gate" as it where. However, Scotland has banned the sale of all "raw" milk for human use. You can still sell it but it must be for animal consumption, and obviously when the buyer gets it home you have no proof what they do with it...

It is legal to sell milk if you genuinely believe it is for animal use.... This does not mean the end user cannot use it themselves.. it is what you believe to be the end use.  BUT you must mark the package to protect yourself from Environmental Health.

I'd be happy to buy some from you - once I get the hafg of it probably on a regular basis  (of course only for goat milk porridge for hens, duck and the cat  ;D) :&>
let's discuss the logistics beginning of August? Then I can have a look at recipes  ;D
btw - That's really good news, I've been looking for ages !  thanks, Laura! :&>

Very interesting information - I too am drowning in milk with a freezer full and more every day...  Now making a gallon into cheese every few days because it can still be frozen and takes up less space.

I have just been asked if I can sell 20 pints a week to a lady with a menagerie of animals - I assume it is for them, unless she wants to bath in it because she doesn't have enough ass's milk?
If I decide to sell it, I will definitely mark the bags as PET MILK etc.

No idea what to charge.  40p a pint?  More?  Less?  I was told the Tesco equivalent is about 70p a pint.

I'm in Kent, and I know my goats came from Kent because I got them from the breeder.  Where is egglady?
