I've pulled up most of our onions since they were all falling over anyway. We haven't had a great crop this year - although - to do them credit - they did survive the winter outside unfleeced.

But one of the red onions came up looking like and extra from a 1970s episode of Dr Who.

Anybody got any thoughts about why this might have happened? Has it bolted?

I don't think it's been eaten because it's too symmetrical.

Spontaneous cloning?
two planted too close together?
extra-terrestrial interference?

Ah yes - that's my scything plaster. At this time of year I never take it off

So - do you think it's two? We have a couple more which look like they're twins.

I don't think I'm going to plant them in the autumn again.

Next year I am going to start them from seed in the polytunnel very early and if they don't get the hang of it then I've still go time to plant sets in spring.

i think the poor thing has started to bolt, then split, hence the healed edges on the halves and the tired looking sprout.
i planted japanese sets last october senshyu yellow i think and they stood the snow and are just finishing now and looking best yet, defo a good type for overwintering.

despite my location, we, like the rest of britain had temps of -17 last winter, so if they can survive that then im sure a few degrees north wont matter too much, good luck!
