Pork Prices

Wondered if you could help ???

I sold a half a pig £80 to friends and they are delighted. They also would like a couple of joint's and chops for her sister, which is fine.

Whats a reasonable price? Looking around they are so varied; I'm not looking for a fortune, just reasonable price for the item, Ill put any money back into stock etc. Appreciate your input.

What I have is as follows.

Leg on the bone 2.5 to 3.0 Kilo
Shoulder boned 2.0 to 2.5 Kilo
Chops bag of 4 approx 1.5 to 1.8 kilo
Breakfast sausages Pk of 6 approx 1/2 Kilo

What was the size of that half pig? For half a 6 month old GOS we charge just over double what you did (and that covers the costs and little more), and an animal park nearby charges even more.

Prices differ throughout the country depending on where you live, and we're in Herts so your area may be less expensive, but factor in all the costs and definitely don't make a loss.

Can't help you with the individual prices as we only sell per half pig, otherwise we'd be left with all the less desirable cuts  ::)

No wonder your friends were delighted with their half pig for £80 - you've unwittingly created a rod for your own back IMHO.
Look at what the local butcher charges for free range pork and you will see it will be anywhere from £8 - £12 a kilo
Just my thoughts....  :)

I have just ordered half a 'farm-reared' (not intensive) OSB x GOS pig for £120.  Last year and 2 years ago I paid £150 for half a pig.

I recently bought chops from a home-rearer for £3 per pair (of large chops), which worked out at about £6/kg.  My butcher charges £7.50/kg for intensively reared (but in truth very nice) chops.

Have a look at Jimmy's Farm mail order prices http://www.jimmysfarm.com/shop/index.cfm/fa/shop/Category_ID/6 for top-end free-range rare-breed pricing.

The half pig sale isn't an issue at all, it was my intention that they had a good deal, they have been very good to us and now for them times are hard, so I'm always pleased when I can help friend's: I should have made the half pig sale, more clear in the first post sorry.  :-[

Ive seen prices anyware from £4 to £8 a Kilo lately. I had considered £5 or £5.50 as an average. I wont set a price at cost on these particular pigs, because they were around longer than they should have been and although that couldn't be helped, thats down to me to suck up.

We've done OK and not a loss so I'm happy, we have meat in the freezer that will have cost us nothing but labour. Thanks for your help, it was very useful and gives me a guide line.
