RIP Grianach
« on: May 17, 2011, 07:49:01 pm »
After a tragic accident I have spent most of today sitting in a field with a 4yo highland pony mare in my arms.  I remember the day she was born was a sunny afternoon in the foaling field beside the road and she was named Feasgair Grianach for that reason.  Grian aka Madam was a real character, one of only 2 fillies I would have kept for life when most of the rest are for sale.  Sod's law it's always the keepers we lose.

I treasure every last minute of the 6+ hours we had together today in the field at the other end of the property from where she was born but on just as sunny an afternoon.  Tho the outcome was not what I was praying and hoping for and in the end I had to call the vet back as she clearly wasn't going to recover despite our earlier optimism.  The shock was just too great and possibly internal injuries were also against us tho there was no way to tell and all the bones appeared undamaged.

What haunts me is that I had put hay out for them all this morning and barely greeted any of the youngsters in that field as I was in a hurry to get to the far mares - while waiting for a tractor to drag her body up to the yard for collection tomorrow I made sure to spend time with the rest..

Just a reminder to appreciate every moment, even when feeding is a chore you never know how many mornings you will have with them..  :'(

I know that we have never spoken on here before, but I just want to let you know that my heart goes out to you.
Every single four-legged friend that I have ever had in my life has meant the world to me and I know just how much it hurts when they leave, often before their time is due.

I thank you for reminding us that time is precious and that we should cherish and savour, rather than rush.
I will make sure that I give every one of my goats a cuddle tomorrow morning and think of Grianach.

Very big hugs and, I'm afraid, tears,

McR xXx
