Hi, can anyone recommend where to get tags from. Got five ewes hopefully in lamb...they are starting to look preggers....first could be due in middle march. Of course we now need to get two sets identical dont we? So, need someone who will do small lots...oh and can you suggest which type will be best. Those big triangular one look huge for a wee lamb!
cheers

Most tag companies will do small batches, but they might just charge you more per tag.

Yes you do need two tags for each lamb, but you don't have to double tag them straight away. If they are to be retained for breeding they will need to be double tagged, or if you sell them on they will need two tags before leaving your holding.

Everyone has their own favourite type of tag - we like the Allflex BubbleGum tags. They are very flexible, easy to apply and the retention rates are excellent. Last year we had over 200 lambs and not a single lost tag.

as an extra spanner... if you sell lambs or hoggs under 12 months old for slaughter then you only need a single tag  or so I understand

we order ours - slim yellow clip ones - from a company called Denimex who were very helpful (01622) 850057 is the Maidstone branch, but they have others around the country I think
- I just called them, gave my CPH and flock number (and herd number for my pigs) and they sent me out the 5 sheep tags (1 for the goat) Can be in duplicate if needed  and/or with sequential numbers for ID purposes (optional I think)
And with 50 pig button tags and the 2 special pliers/applicator/ear-piercing gun thing for both type of tags (be confident, do it hard and fast!), and you can just call up for more tags, or order plenty to start with!! cost about £40 quid all in, arrived in about 4 days. don't know if this was expensive, (don't tell me!!) but I was happy to have everything sorted. A simple google search for sheep tags will find you companies who can make up short runs of tags for you.
