New arrivals this morning 19/8/11
« on: August 19, 2011, 11:01:58 am »
Hello everyone. After lots of worrying over whether we were ever going to get any more piglets! My GOS x Large black sow gave birth this morning in the early hours. :-) To 12 live healthy piglets :-)
My saddleback is confined in the pen next door expecting hers very soon too :-)
The other sow is still in keeping my boar company as showing no signs as yet.
The SB is the only one that has caught pretty quickly after her first litter (January this year) - the other two had litters September & October last year - they had been served by the boar and dates in my diary May 1st (for the one that has produced today) and July 27th for the one still in with him! I'm not sure what the problem has been - whether they were too fat, whether the heat affected his fertility - or the fact he's with them all the time. Just don't know. He went away to serve a sow elsewhere in March so whether he came back fresh and served my girls then - well - clearly he did!!
The SB was served on the royal wedding day - so due Sunday - we shall see :-) - no milk yet although bagging up - but she barely showed a sign last time till she nested and popped within hours.
Piccy's to follow x

Is the one at her back legs the runt, or just full?!

She looks very content, good luck with the rest :)

No - the runt is a black one with a white stripe - that one is full up and hiccupping away!! Lol :-D x
Am thrilled to bits with them - pretty sure mum is too :-) She's my favourite pig - Ruby - I love her and she does look like she's smiling :-) Very proud mum! x

Many many many congrats, she looks so content, my first farrowing experience wasn't quite so happy lost the mum and 5 piglets, but we are hoping for better things round christmas time fingers crossed, most of the time they are such good mums.

Oh no Barrett that must have been awful :-( This is Ruby's second litter and the fourth one we've had here since keeping pigs and although Ruby did all the work I was saying to my husband how much better it feels to have a bit of experience and all to go so well - feels much more relaxed - then my saddleback gave birth last night and we lost one. Gutted! I still have so much to learn. :-( The piglet was alive when it was born and I eased it round from mum's back end and it's cord broke and splattered blood. I am convinced I killed it as it just didn't get breathing properly after :-(
Also Rosie had three piglets then had small afterbirth, then had two more piglets and another afterbirth, then when we checked her this morning there is more afterbirth there. Is this normal? x
