umblilical cord is bleeding in a piglet what should i do. should i be worried

Not seen this in piglets, but I have seen this in lambs. This can be fatal.

Do you / a friendly midwife/ neighbour have a human baby cord clamp - you can re-use then, just sterilise by boiling in water for 10 mins. Just be careful to supervise mum closely that she doesn't bite it off causing more damage.

The piglet will also need an iron injection to prevent anaemia.

Oh, & you'll need to keep it on for 24 hours.

If you are really stuck & can't get a proper clamp, you could try carefully tying it off with strong, clean sewing thread - I've known farmers tie lambs off with a split-down strand of bailer twine - not exactly hygienic, but, in an emergency...

Remember the "purple spray" or saniphor.

Hi guys, if a navel is bleeding and there is enough lenght in the unbilical cord then just tying it into an knot is a good option.
If you don't have that, then as mention, use baler twine or cat gut and tie a knot around the base.
I've also used to use a "hot cut" tail cutter(a portable gas one is available) and use this for quartizing the umbilical cord.
And as mention the clamp. Probably the easiest of the 4 option.

hi baby piglet doing fine. did not touch the cord as the bleeding had all most stopped and thought the cord would be falling of any way. thanks for your help. much appreciated.
